During the initial rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, some residents in Sault Ste. Marie were unsure about where they could get the vaccine and which locations had supply due to the high demand. As a result of this uncertainty, registered locations were receiving a high volume of phone inquiries related to appointment/vaccine availability.
Due to the demand and limited supplies of COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic, a resource was required that can update regularly while enduring high volumes of user traffic.
We worked with the Algoma Ontario Health Team to develop an application to show a list of the various vaccine providers in Sault Ste. Marie who opted to display their vaccine availability to the public. By including each provider’s vaccine eligibility, contact information, and pinned location on map using Google’s API, residents gained access to the information they needed to arrange for vaccinations.
The architecture was tested thoroughly to ensure the application ran smoothly under heavy traffic.
During a global pandemic where vaccine accessibility was critical, Sault Ste. Marie residents had a tool to check vaccine availability prior to contacting providers to book appointments. The Vaccine Availability Tracker drastically reduced the number of phone inquiries at vaccine locations.
